Concert Series Begins
Thursday, August 9th, 2007The Fred and Beverly Dukes Memorial Concert Series begins again on
Sunday, September 9 at 4 p.m. with our first concert being Sanctuary, a
jazz group originating from Cal State University Bakersfield led by
music theory and jazz professor Dr. Doug Davis. This ensemble features
five outstanding musicians, including Davis on piano as well as Ken
Bausano on trumpet, Mike Raney on saxophone, James Dethlefson on bass,
and Ernie Cervantes on drums.
All of Sanctuary’s original music is mostly composed by Davis, whose work has been recorded by jazz artists such as Chick Corea and Bennie Wallace. Cervantes
describes the music as “challenging, definitely pushing the ability
level of the group.” Several members of the ensemble have played with
the group for over 20 years.
Other concerts in the series will include our own organist, Jim Page,
with several local musicians on October 28; Banshee in the Kitchen on
November 18; the Smith Brothers piano duo on February 10; and Helen
Rummelsberg (piano) and her daughter, Judy (cello), with Gordon Mehling
on violin on March 30. All concerts are free of charge, and no
reservations are necessary.
Longtime members of both College Heights Congregational Church and
First Congregational Church, Fred and Beverly Dukes generously left us
an endowment designed to fund an annual concert series as a gift to our
community. All concerts last year were well-attended, the average
attendance being about 120 people per concert. We hope that you will
mark the above dates on your calendars and join us for the excitement
and fun of live music in the sanctuary.
