Carry Me
by Tim Lowly

Brian Volck in the on-line blog “Image: Art, Faith, Mystery” writes: “Lately, I’ve been reading some works at the intersection of theology and the impaired body. As a physician trying to live as a Christian, thatís where I spend much of my professional time. While I treasure idealized portrayals of the human figure in classical and Italian Renaissance art, I, like you, perhaps, am an imperfect body in a suffering world. In my life and work, I experience pain and suffering less as a brutal shattering of perfection than a familiar, often ironic companion - Here’s where I find the work of (21st century) visual artist Tim Lowly so compelling. His daughter, Temma, who appears frequently in his paintings, has a constellation of impairments Lowly never disguises. - Lowly lovingly places his daughter in contexts which neither idealize nor demean her.

(Blogs are like on-line journals kept by individuals with the addition that they are often interactive.

Often visitors may comment on entries and create discussion. These sites are not related in any way to First Congregational Church and are provided only as a way to provoke thought on faith and faith issues.)

Church
Position:
Director of Children’s
Ministries

Birthplace, or growing up
place:
Beulah, Michigan (if you use your left hand as a
Michigan map, I grew up in the “pinky”.)

Education: Bachelor
of Science degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University
(Major:  Mental Impairment; Minor:  Social
Studies).  I was about 2
classes away from my Master’s Degree at CSUB (but haven’t been enrolled
for about 7 years).

Occupation(if other than
church): I run a small-family child care preschool out of a classroom
in our home three half-days per week; and I am a consultant with
The Pampered
Chef
; in addition to working 10-12 hrs per week at the
church.

Pre-Occupation: I was an
elementary Special Education teacher for six years (1 yr with the
KCSOS, and 5 yrs with PBVUSD).  I started my preschool program
nine
years ago, when Andy & I got married, so I could be home with
Alex
and (two years later) Natalie.

Hobby: Unfortunately I don’t
have much spare time for hobbies — and I have no sports abilities –
but I love to bake and read mystery novels.

Last books
read or favorites:
This
area has been sadly lacking for me in the last number of months
(working on some remodeling projects around our house took care of any
“free time” I had).  But I am looking forward to (hopefully)
diving
into the new Jonathan Kellerman novel this summer, and I need to finish
reading the book “Captivating:  Unveiling the
Mystery of
a Woman’s
Soul
“.

Favorite
Music:
If this tells you anything, my car radio is set to
four stations which I jump around between:  93.1 (Pirate Radio
– my favorite –  they play everything!), 98.5 (the Fox,
classic rock), 95.3 (KLLY, pop/rock); and 100.7 (K-DUV, contemporary
Christian music).

Dream Job: Professional volunteer.  I’d
love it if I didn’t have to work, and I could focus my time on
volunteering for various local, national & international
charities and organizations.

Magazines: Children’s Ministries; People; Family
Fun

Favorite Places: Santa Barbara (I’d love to live
there);  Cambria (Andy & I were married there);
Traverse City, MI (gorgeous); Mackinaw Island (it’s this fabulous
little island between the lower and upper penisulas of MI); Greenfield
Village-Henry Ford Museum (I used to work there as a “Living History
Interpreter”).

Specialty: Hmmm.
Kids?  Cooking?
Organization?

Favorite
foods:
Chocolate!!  And I still
crave these vegetarian pasties from this little shop in Traverse City,
and I haven’t lived there 15 years.  Oh, and
lobster.

Inspired by: My mom, who taught me about hard
work and perserverence; my family, who I want to “do right” by; the
Holy Spirit who guides me.

Childhood ambition: To be a
mom.

Fondest
memory:
My wedding; the birth of my
children.

Indulgence: Bubble baths; a glass of wine; a
good book or magazine — and if I can do all three together, that’s
even better!
