Carry Me
by Tim Lowly

Brian Volck in the on-line blog “Image: Art, Faith, Mystery” writes: “Lately, I’ve been reading some works at the intersection of theology and the impaired body. As a physician trying to live as a Christian, that’s where I spend much of my professional time. While I treasure idealized portrayals of the human figure in classical and Italian Renaissance art, I, like you, perhaps, am an imperfect body in a suffering world. In my life and work, I experience pain and suffering less as a brutal shattering of perfection than a familiar, often ironic companion - Here’s where I find the work of (21st century) visual artist Tim Lowly so compelling. His daughter, Temma, who appears frequently in his paintings, has a constellation of impairments Lowly never disguises. - Lowly lovingly places his daughter in contexts which neither idealize nor demean her.

Two Opportunities to Learn & Grow

1. New Adult Class to begin Sundays

Beginning this Sunday, January 15th, we will have a new adult study on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. in the Fireside RoomóìQuestions of Faith.î Please join us for this lively video-based discussion series!

2. Ethics Classes ó Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

First Congregational Church is continuing the Wednesday night ethics discussions originally led by Steve Bacon.
During this month the discussions have focused first on journalistic
ethics but mainly on human ethical dilemmas about difficult issues that
ordinary people have faced or might face in daily living. For example,
is it ever permissible to lie? Could property ever be more valuable
than a human life?  Might breaking a law ever be considered a
moral act? Is taking a human life ever justifiable?  Exploration
of these issues has led to much debate among our group
members.

Dilemma discussions arose in the 1970s out of work pioneered at Harvard
Universityís School of Education under the direction of Dr. Lawrence
Kohlberg.  Kohlberg spent over 30 years studying human moral and
intellectual development.  His work inspired other fascinating
studies, including “In A Different Voice: Womenís Conceptions of Morality
(Gilligan) and “Raising Good Children” (Likona). Did you know that
women often think about moral issues differently than men do? Likona
offers suggestions about how to teach children about morality.

Your ideas also are encouraged.

These lively meetings are at 7 p.m. in the chapel on Wednesdays
at the church.  We hope that there is something that you can draw
out of the discussions that will prove useful in your lives and with
your families.

Choices, Decisions and Faith Series

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

Wednesday Night Live, beginning October 26th.

  • How do we decide what is the ìrightî thing to do?
  • How does our faith inform our decision-making?
  • What ethical standards should we expect from ourselves,
  •       our workplace, our church, our community, our culture?

We are inviting members of the CSUB faculty, as well as leaders in
business and our community to come and talk about moral and responsible
decision-making.

We hope youíll join us for this series ó See you Wednesday evenings!

If youíd like to come for dinner at 6

before heading to the Chapel for the program from 7 to 8 p.m.
