Carry Me
by Tim Lowly

Brian Volck in the on-line blog “Image: Art, Faith, Mystery” writes: “Lately, I’ve been reading some works at the intersection of theology and the impaired body. As a physician trying to live as a Christian, thatís where I spend much of my professional time. While I treasure idealized portrayals of the human figure in classical and Italian Renaissance art, I, like you, perhaps, am an imperfect body in a suffering world. In my life and work, I experience pain and suffering less as a brutal shattering of perfection than a familiar, often ironic companion - Here’s where I find the work of (21st century) visual artist Tim Lowly so compelling. His daughter, Temma, who appears frequently in his paintings, has a constellation of impairments Lowly never disguises. - Lowly lovingly places his daughter in contexts which neither idealize nor demean her.

Wednesday Night Live Suppers

Sunday, June 1st, 2008
Times at our church “they are a changin’ “!!

The Wednesday Night Live Committee met last week and we need to tell you what we discussed and ask for your input about our  current plans.

There will be a series of “Short Studies” after the meal clean-up: from 7:15 to 8:15pm, the subject of which will be announced prior to the study so you will have time to make arrangements to attend any one that interests you. There should be a note elsewhere in the newsletter about the first one.
Real Buddies will not be meeting throughout the summer but will resume in the fall. If you will require child care this summer so you can attend a study, please let us know.

We have asked for the same donation for food since Wednesday Night Live began. As I’m sure you are aware food costs are on the rise.We have also found it necessary on many occasions to use paper products due to busy schedules that do not allow people time to help with clean up. We have always been self supporting, taking no funds from the main budget. In order to continue, we feel it necessary to increase the suggested donation to $4.00 per adult and $2.00 per child.

We also would ask you to PLEASE Sign up, preferably by Sunday so we know how much meat to thaw for the meal and how much fruit & vegetables to buy. We used to be able accommodate 2-3 people extra, but lately we have had to cook for 10 to 15 extra people because so many people neglect to sign up, and we really want to be able to feed anyone who wants to come. But this results in our either giving away or throwing away extra food when these people don’t come, which also increases our costs.

If you have some comments which would help us with the direction we should take, please let us know - either by phoning one of us or by email if you have internet access. Also, please let us know if you will be attending regularly, just for special studies, and if you will need child care.

Thanks,
Bobbie Hulson:871-9270; Keslinn Kohfeld-Stout: 588-9571;
Brenda Hoschele:324-5853; Peghi Webb: 397-4677.

Chick Flicks

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

If
you are interested in being part of a Women’s Group that feeds your
body as well as your soul, we have the group for you:  Chick Flicks!

This group
will meet at 4pm on the second Sunday of each month (or third Sunday
some months). We will start out with an interesting movie, and will
finish up a dinner, which will compliment our movie. Each host will
receive great recipes to go with the movie theme, and the program also
includes “easy meal options”. During dinner we will engage in low-key,
but thoughtful discussion and devotions.

Participants will take turns hosting or co-hosting a month. Get-togethers may be at the home of the host or at the church.   Decorating ideas are included in the program,
but participants can do as much or as little decorating as they would like.

Cost is $5/month/person to cover the cost of the meal, movie rental & decorations.  (Where else can you get a great movie and meal for that price?!) To be fair and equitable, participants will pay each month, even if
unable to attend. People may pay on a monthly basis (for the month in
advance) or they can pay a larger chunk to cover a number of months at a time.

Our first get-together will be on Sunday, October 21st @ 4pm.

The more the merrier, so if you’d like to join us, or if you have questions, please contact Lara Norman-Kehe.

Do You Like Cycling?

Friday, September 1st, 2006

[Macro error: Can't call the script because the name "PictureRef" hasn't been defined.]
Some years ago, our congregation supported a new church start in Las
Vegas-Northwest Community Church.
They are growing and doing well-and
their congregation has now begun a “Still Speaking Cycling Team,” complete with official cycling jerseys. The SSCT sees its mission as

1) spreading the word of the Still Speaking Ministry,
2) connecting other UCC members who share a combined passion of cycling and Still Speaking, and
3) having fun!

If you’d like more information, call Lance Wilson at 702-658-3235 or email him at lwilson@lvucc.org. As they put it in their flyer, “if
Jesus embraced lepers, prostitutes, and convicts, we believe sweaty
cyclists fit the bill also! Keep on riding and spreading the Still
Speaking good news of an all-inclusive God!”

Mentioning the Still Speaking campaign, the youth ministries group at
Montebello Plymouth Congregational Church
is raising funds for a
mission trip to Thailand, by selling terrific God is Still Speaking
t-shirts. The shirt says God Is Still Speaking in dozens of the
world’s languages. Very cool!  $15 (Sm to XL) or $16 (2 and 3 XL) each
plus $2 postage. Contact MPCC at 323-721-5568 or email mpccucc@yahoo.com. Mitchell Young, Pastor at MPCC has sent us an order form to make it easy.  Supplies are limited!
